Assa – initially this term referred
to Leningrad art
movement ascending to the circles of necrorealist artists. Home academy, formed
by Timur Novikov, who united the New Artists, was also called Assa and from these
entrails in 1985 began the expansion of new culture, setting up to remain a
symbol of Perestroika. In the mid 80’s due to the fusion of genres of theater, art
and music as well as mingling of artists from different places, this movement comprised
other street groups, musicians and artists, making new ways of self-expression
and their new art. The apogee of this movement
was shooting of the movie with the same name “Assa” in 1987, which became a
certain symbol for the young blood of Perestroika, but failed to depict the
whole width and depth of the movement itself.
